Taking your Job Search Green

 

I ran across an interesting article about making your job search "green" the other day. Found on the Earth911.com blog, the article focuses on ways for your job search to have less of an environmental impact. The article's author Trey Granger, offers "8 Ways to Green Your Job Search". Although, I may not fully agree with all Granger's tips, I do think they are great food for thought. Some tips that Granger offers include conducting your networking all online, utilizing the resources of your library to the fullest, scheduling your interviews in such a way to minimize driving around and looking into work in an environmentally related field. President-Elect Obama was quoted yesterday during a meeting with Cardinal Fastener & Speciality Company employees as saying, "Renewable energy isn't something pie in the sky. It's not part of a far-off future. It's happening all across America right now." Obama continued, "It can create millions of jobs and entire new industries if we act right now."

You can bet expansion of environmental jobs is going to get some attention.

Green Jobs Could Mean Green for You

Even with the U.S. economy wobbling back and forth on uncertainly, one sector of the job market seems to have a bright future. According to a recently released United Nations report, new jobs are already being generated in the "green" sector as companies and individuals strive to make human life on the planet more environmentally friendly.

The UN report predicts that the "green" movement, may lead to millions more jobs around the globe in the future. Areas that are seen as quite important in this greening process are energy supply, transportation, agriculture and forestry, and construction.

A report that will be released tomorrow by the U.S. Conference of Mayors (according to the Associated Press) predicts that the move to renewable energy and greater efficiency may lead to 4.2 million jobs over the next three decades.  The green economy is definitely looking like it will produce jobs that make lots of people lots of green.  

Environmentally Aware Jobs for Changing Global Times

The price of gas is soaring quickly to the $4 or above average per gallon in the U.S. Global warming and renewable energy development is the talk of the news media and average citizens everywhere. The prospects for long term career security for those individuals seeking or in eco friendly careers is great.

In your job search or career change, you may want to take a hard look at pursuing an environmental friendly career. Today, eco careers have expanded way beyond the biologist, ecologist, and outdoor educator positions of the past. A quick search of a website such as http://www.ecojobs.com/ reveals jobs ranging from renewable energy specialist and fisheries observer to policy analyst. The site even lists jobs that require technical writing skills and public relations and marketing awareness.  I have a feeling in the future eco jobs will only be limited by the imagination.
